JoAnn Riedl’s deep, aggressive vocals and percussive, dirty, rock-guitar style hail from Milwaukee. "Her ability to switch from acoustic to electric in an intimate solo setting, along with her raucous, almost punk, approach, has set her apart from her peers with reckless abandon," according to Brian Barney and David Luhrssen of the Milwaukee WI Shepherd Express. Playing live since 1998, Riedl has performed solo, with the backing bands Kicked Out Scout, the Relief, and is a front woman for the Barrettes. She is working on her third full-length album. JoAnn has performed in Canada, Ireland and throughout the US.

Norman Cristofoli is a poet and spoken-word performer and publisher of the Labour of Love literary magazine. He is also the co-founder of the Coffeehouse website for independent artists. However, if all the world is a stage, then he prefers to stay in the tattered old balcony seats, hiding in the shadows, away from the spotlight. He believes that too much emphasis is placed upon the artist, whereas the only thing that truly matters is the art itself. Bios should be buried with the artist... let the art live on.

Peter Haskell was born in 1962 A.D., on the same day that one of the original "Jetsons" episodes was first broadcast. He has lived in Vancouver all his life except from 1978 to 1980, when he lived in Ottawa. His cartoons were published in a free Ottawa publication with a circulation of 5,000, from June 1979 to June 1981. In November 2005, he was on the ballot for Mayor of Vancouver. He campaigned to receive zero votes but sold anti-homelessness pre-bonds for $5 so the homeless could receive a free bus pass.

Jane Ormerod was born on the south coast of England, crossed the Atlantic in 2004 and now lives in New York City. Originally a painter, she switched to writing as a result of a bet. Her work tends to be found in publications with grubby, rock 'n' roll titles, e.g. Dirt, Arsenic Lobster, Failbetter, Stained Sheets, Word Riot and Unpleasant Event Schedule. A recent performance review in Art Comments described her as "descriptive yet judicious and yet seductive". That's a lot of yets.

Lisa Dewey, San Francisco Bay Area artist and owner of indie label Kitchen Whore Records, began playing shows in 1990 and has since released four albums, two EPs and a book. Her latest record, Busk (Bella Union/Kitchen Whore), was released in the spring of 2004. As with the previous release, Weather Changer Girl, this record contains the work and assistance of the legendary Simon Raymonde (Cocteau Twins). Together, Lisa and Simon have produced another masterpiece of female vocals over beautiful guitar melodies. It’s dreamy, multilayered, atmospheric, gorgeous pop with favorable comparisons to the Cocteau Twins and Everything But The Girl.

Janor Hypercleats was born in New Orleans in 1959. In 1980, he became nationally known as a performer when he headlined the first Subgenius Convention in Dallas. He was one of the authors of The Book of the Subgenius, published in 1983 by McGraw-Hill. Throughout the '80s and '90s, he performed around the country with the Church of the Subgenius. He was the co-author of four Subgenius Books published by Simon and Schuster in the '80s and '90s. In 1998, he left the Church of the Subgenius and became a street performer under the name Mr. T.V.

All shows are pay-what-you-can.

Ocho has been performing original songs for almost ten years. His songs reflect a mind that's upbeat, thoughtful, irreverent, frustrated, and inspired. They give the listener something to laugh at, like the futility of survival in the modern world, and the lack of answers to important life questions: "What's our ultimate purpose?" and "How can I make money without really DOING anything?" At 16, he unwittingly started a punk-rock scene in a rural South Dakota town that still thrives. He recently received his Master's degree in counseling psychology. His latest CD, "GoriillaBuddha," explores the stupidity and healing power of that science.

Mike Young is a major proponent of remote-controlled grace. He co-edits NOÖ Journal (www.noojournal.com), a free literary and political print magazine distributed all over and online. Plus he publishes stuff: poetry and fiction, in lovely indie magazines like Pindeldyboz, Opium Magazine, elimae, Juked, Wordriot and 3AM Magazine. Somehow, despite the smog and android droppings that dominate modern air, he has also managed to develop a singing voice. It is independent from his body. It pays scant rent. Check out his blog Dragonfly on a Dog Chain at www.noojournal.com/blog.

T-Poe is a native of Portland, Oregon. He is a Combat Veteran of the Vietnam War, which has influenced his poetry greatly. Although he has no formal writing education, he has written extensively about the war as well as the wonders of nature and the condition of this animal "man" as he have experienced them. He knows only that which he has seen and felt, and hope you may, through his words, experience thoughts and emotions foreign and fascinating, if not familiar and comforting.

Mary Van Note's edgy and unique style of stand-up comedy has already been recognized by various Bay Area comics as a refreshing up-and-coming talent. After developing a cult following at the UC Santa Cruz campus, Mary Van Note has started her stand-up career in the Bay Area to big laughs, moans, dirty looks and scared faces. In her off time she writes short stories, comic books and zines, finished a novel titled Blue Balls, and performs in the sketch-comedy group "Sunshine Fortress."

Olatundji Akpo-Sani grew up in Rochester, New York. He moved to Boulder, Colorado at the age of 21 and has spent the last eight years improving and performing his unique style of poetry in the Boulder and Denver area. He is married to Lisa Bendetto and currently has a stepdaughter, Sierra. Olatundji is co-editor and founder of Baobob Tree Press, which he runs out of his house. He has four books of poetry: Bricolage, Panopticon, Dive, and most recently, MonkeyShines; he has appeared in Poems from Penny Lane and Illiterate magazine.

Yehuda Fisher lives in Toronto with two computers and a dozen instruments... almost. This 27-year-old brass player, singer, songwriter, and actor has been in the Toronto arts scene for years, both entertaining and terrorizing audiences around the city, depending on who you ask. Formerly he hosted and produced Art Attack, a weekly magazine show for CHRY 105.5 FM, and worked as a freelance arts publicist. He now hosts the very successful series WordJam: Poetry/Music Fusion Playtime. Yehuda often plays trombone with the Parkdale Social Club and other local musicians and is currently working on recording his first album.

Elliot Harmon is a poet and, more sporadically, an actor, a musician, a playwright, a teacher, a graduate student, and a director. He grew up in South Dakota and developed national recognition through the Omaha poetry-slam scene. Since then, he's been featured at numerous readings and slams across the Western U.S. His allusions to Brecht and Chekhov (not to mention his San Francisco street address) do little to hide his true country-boy poetic sensibilities. His backpack includes several copies of his two chapbooks, Luke, Don't Settle! and Summer of the Pterodactyl, and his CD, But You Don't Understand.

Ocho has been performing original songs for almost ten years.
Dave Fried has lived in Chicago, Illinois for the past nine years. His favorite things in life include (in some order of importance): eating tacos, riding bikes, d-beat punk, and bowling. He'll most likely want to try the regional food in your area. He made his first zine in 1994 after reading about Riot Grrrl, making the connection between punk and zines. He writes the queerpunk perzine Black Carrot and helps fill the void with Grilled Tuna Tape distro. If you ever want to get his blood moving, put on some Finnish Hardcore, offer a coffee and take him bowling.

Troy Curtis has settled in San Jose, California after years as a rambling poet and musician. Born in the small blue-collar town of Rockville, Connecticut, Troy's desire to perform stems from his parents' sacrifice of their artistic dreams. With a voice that perilously floats, Troy's titanic lyrics sink into one's heart like stolen treasure. Recorded in an abandoned church, Troy's first album Songs for Girls Who Don't Deserve Them is presented live and unedited. The album was created to replace mixed tapes and CDs as the preeminent way to express loss at the unfortunate endings to romantic relationships. www.myspace.com/troycurtis

China Martens is the editor of The Future Generation: A Zine for Subculture Parents, Kids, Friends & Others, and is expecting her first book out this winter -- an anthology of the last 16 years of The Future Generation -- with Atomic Book Company. She also writes a column for Slug and Lettuce and puts out numerous other one-shot zines and chapbooks like Dustbunny, SuperMarket SuperModel, and the Baltimore City Paper "Best Zine" award-winning I Was... a Student Nurse!

Eric Lab Rat traverses his native Chicago on a blue Schwinn tricycle, meeting interesting people and collecting curios from dumpsters. He splits time between stints as a DJ, math tutor, and landscaper. On Tuesdays, he hosts a soul show on WLUW; on Fridays he throws down on the legendary freeform station WZRD. His set may include letters written to concepts, God, and government; poems about ghosts; and songs about celebrity vaginas. His work can be found under a variety of aliases in Gapers Block, the Banana King, and The 2nd Hand. A couple of times a month, he unloads on http://reverendlabrat.blogspot.com.

Toronto: Sat. July 22, 8 pm. Art Bar in the Gladstone Hotel (1214 Queen St. W.) w/ teller of goofy tales Mike Bryant!

Hadassah M. Hill (aka. Axon Panter) is a New York/Toronto-based performance artist and writer. Her work has appeared in Geeks, Misfits and Outlaws (2004) and Without A Net (2003). She toured Ontario and Quebec in 2004/05 with the performance troupe Trash and Ready and has performed at Ladyfest, Cheap Queers, Hysteria, and Mayworks. Her recordings include Bombshell Lexicon (2005) and Bad Girls Belief System (2005). In August, she's heading to Femme 2006 in San Francisco. Hadassah's also a textile artist who works in reconstructing/recycling vintage clothing and embroidery, and is Associate Art Director with $pread Magazine. She loves anything on two wheels, and rhinestones. www.hadassahsbizzare.com

Cort Bulloch is a roots songwriter raised in southern Alberta. From being a jug hound in the oil patch to selling beads in Peru, Cort has roamed from Tuktoyuktuk to Buenos Aires in search of what he found to be his passion at the ripe age of 23: songwriting! The balance between melody, poetry and up-tempo pieces has him compared to such artists as Arlo Guthrie and Tracy Chapman. His nomadic, tossed salad past, along with his charming stage presence makes for a combination in which you will rarely find in folk songwriters. www.cortmusic.com

Jesse Dangerously is both a fan and a star in Halifax’s hip-hop scene and keeps the city in raps Friday nights as host of CKDU’s The Pavement. He was voted Best MC in this year's Best of Music poll in Coast magazine. A prolific performer/producer, he has four solo releases and many collaborative credits. He's brainy and bratty. Fast-talking and sing-songing. Self-aggrandizing and self-deprecating. He has performed at Toronto’s Wavelength and Montreal's Under Pressure Graffiti Festival. By the time you read this, he'll have played the North By Northeast festival in Toronto. And probably have been smooched a lot. www.dangerously.ca

Jennifer Whiteford lives in Ottawa, Ontario where she works in a bookstore, teaches college courses, and writes fiction. She is a nearsighted vegetarian with an allergy to cheese. Her personal zine of stories and comics, Matilda, just celebrated its five year anniversary. Jennifer's long-time-coming first novel, Grrrl, (published by Gorsky Press in April 2006) is a punkrock coming-of-age story set in Toronto's suburbs in the early '90s. To satisfy her internal music geek and her love of free records, Jennifer also reviews albums and interviews bands for Razorcake Magazine. Her online blog, www.matildazine.org, will delight those who enjoy tales of biking to rock shows and pictures of rottweilers.

Jeff Cottrill is a fiction writer and spoken-word performer whose stage act uses elements of performance poetry, comedy, theatre, storytelling... even the occasional puppet. With a satirical, often darkly comic flavour, he likes to make his audiences laugh, cringe, or (preferably) both. He has also written film reviews, arts articles, and even (gasp!) relationship self-help. Jeff has featured in many Toronto literary shows as well as in several U.S. cities and even in London, England. In 2005, he released his first CD, Cracktastic!, and he has also had two chapbooks published. Jeff likes movies, travel, and puppies. http://jeffcottrill.coffeehouse.ca

He also contributes to the2ndhand, Zine World: A Reader's Guide to the Underground Press, Dusted Magazine, The Machine and other magazines and websites. On Wednesday nights, he hosts a show on WLUW-FM. With the rest of the Diatribe Media family, he organizes small-press events in Chicago. With Nell Taylor, he co-founded the Chicago Underground Library, which you should ask him about. He fancies himself a comedian, though accounts vary. He is an ordained minister and performs weddings at reasonable rates. He maintains a skeletal online presence at loudwire.net/~emerson.

Tanis Rideout's first appearance was in a foreign story line (Unclear Origins, issue #8), which took her through Tai Chi Ch'uan poetry training around the globe. Never a master of secret identity, she took refuge from the world to master control of language and rhythm (see The Lost Years, issue #4). During that time she learned to wield words with ninja-like precision. She emerged from seclusion to join the Justice League of Poets (Northern Stories, issues #63-on). Current plotlines leave our hero seeking to balance her search for poetic justice with daily existence (The Continuing Adventures of Po' It Girl). www.geocities.com/tanis_rideout

What do hippie parents and too many Zeppelin albums make? Snoovy -- Toronto's veteran grrl rocker gives you the flower child experience in a blend of her own jumpy rock hits and moody ballads. Her sweet and sultry vocals and heavy-handed acoustic rhythm guitar will make you go groovy all over, baby. She's the Montreal Fringe Fest's battle-of-the-bands winner, the Toronto pride stage chick rocker, University of Manitoba's flute choir diva, and California's speed metal folkie. A true tour baby at heart, Snoovy joins the Roadshow to spread more peace, love, and rock and roll. www.snoovy.com

Professor Prawns is an emerging practitioner in the field of participatory performance art, with a background in competitive improv theatre, weird performance art and slam poetry. He suffers from a condition known as shapeshifting-into-bunched-beets-and-leading-people-in-national-geographic-
responsive-readings-and-freestyling-rhymes-while-chopping-wood-in-a-speedo-itis. The only known cure for this rare disease is sharing his unique pathologies with others in the form of a highly interactive performance format called: Learnology.

Mark Silverman is a songwriter and a comedian who lives in San Francisco. He's been featured on National Public Radio and Dr. Demento, and he's played hundreds of shows in the U.S. and the U.K. Mark is single. He is also tall and handsome, he makes lots of money, and he can spit real far. Mark thinks it's odd that people who write their own bios are forced to refer to themselves in the third-person.

Laura Boo hails from the frosty east (Montreal) and now lives in the soggy west (Vancouver). She's a renowned fag hag, a relentless workaholic and a delightful deviant searching endlessly for that place where romance and the mundane realities of passion collide. Publisher of 'zines and chapbooks, producer of video, installation, conceptual performance art and queer dance parties, she is also an activist, educator and closet academic. Her (anti-)poetry explores the personal and political through playful comedics and painful self-exposition. Her brain-children include the media-frenzy-inducing Team Makeout performance series and the chapbooks "Idiotology" and "Pathetic".

CORT BULLOCH is a roots songwriter raised in southern Alberta. From being a jug hound in the oilpatch to selling beads in Peru, Cort has roamed from Tuktoyuktuk to Buenos Aires in search of what he found to be his passion at the ripe age of 23:
songwriting! The balance between melody, poetry and up-tempo pieces has him compared to such artists as Arlo Guthrie and Tracy Chapman. His nomadic, tossed salad past, along with his charming stage presence makes for a combination in which you will rarely find in folk songwriters.

SABRINA LIGHTSTONE is a Toronto poet who was born in Montreal. Her work, Beat-like, musical and romantic, synthesizes rhythm and feeling. She is an emo poet, a title that refers to the sentimentality and intimacy of her voice. Her goal is to evoke, overwhelm, inspire. With intellectual excitement Sabrina studies
literature and writing at York University. Passionate for city life, she enjoys both crowded places and silent spaces, painting and music. Sabrina has performed at various Toronto word events. She believes in time travel and in travelling the world. Her artistic analysis of the universe is ultimately hopeful.

DANE JAH RAS, AKA Dane Swan was selected for 2005s Second Place Toronto slam team competing in Canada's Festival of Spoken Word. Dane is currently working on more literary works and his second rap album. "Animal," "Enigma," "spiritually uplifting" are other peoples' words to describe the slam poet and conscious emcee. His performances include a capella raps, aggressive slam poetry and picturesque prose. Of his first LP Red a journalist proclaimed, "I think the thoughtful, rhythmic Dane Jah Ras has fullfiled his duty in expanding the listener's mental horizons." Check out his website (www.danejahras.com), come, and judge for yourself.

JASON ANDERSON’s first novel is Showbiz (ECW Press), a darkly comic saga about fame, murder, magic and dinner theatre. His short stories have been published in Taddle Creek, THIS Magazine and The IV Lounge Reader. He regularly writes about movies and music for eye Weekly,
The Globe and Mail, Toro and Toronto Life. He grew up in Calgary, lives in Toronto, plays keyboards in a band called The Two Koreas, and has earned literally dozens of dollars as a pop-culture pundit on assorted television programs.

MINGUS TOURETTE drives a pink ambulance. He is the author of nunt, a finalist for the 2005 Writers Guild of Alberta's Stephansson Award for Poetry. Tourette was the ringmaster behind the notorious Write The Nation tour, a 12,000 km cross-Canada, poetry and pink ambulance blitzkrieg. Tourette writes and edits the gonzo Daily Mingus, and has been detained by police for wearing nothing but a gasmask and an American flag diaper. Tourette lives in Edmonton, where he is working on his next novel. He is no longer married and has no children, to the best of his knowledge.

COOLHANDLUKE the rapper, not to be confused with the Christian rock band, gets around. Vancouver-born, time spent in New York and PA's notorious Carson Long Military Institute lead to a healthy distrust of pretty much anything in a uniform (clowns included). Three years between Queens, NY and CLMI fostered the idea that words can and will cause a whole lot of trouble. Fast-forward to… an aborted university education soaked in beer, drugs, bar fights; a couple of bands; one wonderful sober fall building a house in the country; and finally, Toronto. Out of this an album hell.o is spawned with his band Stop Die Resuscitate. Expect a microphone covered in saliva, reworked raps, hot beats and a sponsorship by the letter F.

All shows are pay-what-you-can.

RYAN ROBERT MULLEN is like this small barbarian warrior with big black glasses. Together his wife and himself strike out for fortunes unknown with their wee babe in the Wisconsin Northwoods. Here they live a sort of caveman existence — surviving almost solely on sharp cheese and dark beer. Ryan occasionally gets "La Loco" and drunk and scribbles some nasty stuff all over the walls. He has a book called Naughty Sweet Boy and is a Fountain Award nominee. He likes his readings to have many big laughing and have everybody saying, “Man that guy is good let me buy you a drink.” www.ryanrobertmullen.net

JENNIFER LOVEGROVE is a writer living in Toronto. Her latest book of poems is I Should Never Have Fired the Sentinel (ECW Press, 2005), which reviewers have called "edgy, surreal, innovative, thought provoking – and very, very cool...packs enough punch to knock you on your ass." Her first book, The Dagger Between Her Teeth (ECW Press, 2002) reinvents the lives of two seventeenth century female pirates, and examines the dynamics of women and violence. She publishes the literary zine dig., and chapbooks through her wayward armadillo press, and occasionally teaches DIY publishing workshops. Meanwhile, she makes and sells pornographic soap called Soap Scum, and plays hockey. www.jenniferlovegrove.com

TIM HALL worked as a porn movie soundtrack composer, cheesy dance music producer, gay moving man and live sex accompanist before turning to the big bucks of indie publishing. Tim's first novel is called Half Empty and it is about the horror of sobriety and the wonders of having your salad tossed. You can view it online at www.undiepress.com

While waiting, he avoids stalkers by using an elaborate array of capes, medieval weaponry, and spy equipment. In addition to producing LivingProof zine, from which he will be reading, he also writes zine reviews for Zine World and music reviews for Splendid Magazine. Texas-born, Jersey-raised, Pennsylvania-educated, these days he can be found at various houses of ill repute around Chicago. www.atm4.net

JESSICA MANACK was born in the year of the Monkey and lives in Pittsburgh. She has staring contests with form al poetry, and insists that “sonnet” is not a bad word. She has been known to cry, as a matter of fact, “I think, therefore iamb!” She’ll be reading from her recent chapbook, Heartattack City, which features poetry about food, travel, longing, and above all, what it means to be a girl. When she’s not writing, eating, travelling, or pining away for something or other, she cranks out the crafts as one half of Miss Chief Productions. www.misschiefshop.com

KEVIN HAINEY has been reeling in the years by pen and paper since he was but a wee pup. Now a grown hound of 25, he’s situated in Toronto, among mounting piles of his own work, one novel’s length of which, Thought Preserve, he managed to self-publish last year. For income, Kevin writes about all kinds of music for eye Weekly and Exclaim! On stage, Kevin fuses poetry and monologue into something that he hopes is as intellectually stimulating as it is thought provoking and funny; honest words for open ears and blown minds. www.kevinhainey.net
